Making Choices - Parenting Program Inventory

About the Making Choices Parenting Program Inventory

This Making Choices inventory gives parents and practitioners information about parenting programs so they can make choices that fit their requirements. The inventory describes programs in detail and also invites comments and ratings from users.

Users are invited to give a star rating and descriptive feedback about programs they are familiar with. You will find a wide variety of opinions in this section. This diversity reflects the fact that what suits one facilitator working with a particular group of parents in a certain community will not suit another facilitator in other circumstances. Reading the comments of colleagues will make it easier for parent educators and administrators of organizations that serve families to make an informed choice among the wealth of resources available to them.

Criteria for inclusion in inventory

Focus on Parenting

The inventory is limited to courses in which parenting issues and parent-child interactions are the main focus. This means that you will not find courses whose principal goal is smoking cessation for parents or family literacy. Neither are there programs that are directed only to children, such as a social skills or anti-bullying course.

Group learning format

The programs in the inventory are all primarily intended for use with groups of parents. Therefore, you will not find courses that are only used in a one-to-one or home visit context. Similarly, parenting courses designed for self-study are not listed here.

Focus on parenting young children

Although you will find programs in the inventory that are directed to “all ages,” it covers primarily programs that are suitable for young children, up to age six. You will not find programs that are intended exclusively for parents of teens

Available and replicable

Finally, many facilitators develop their own parenting course, drawing from a variety of sources to tailor it to the group of parents they are working with. While these may be very worthwhile programs, they are not reproducible by anyone else. To be included in this inventory, programs must have at least a facilitator’s manual, and perhaps other materials, so that another organization can replicate the course.
